First, take time to decide on a holiday that will suit the whole family. As a parent, you have a duty to find out what everyone will enjoy. Plane tickets can be a great burden but a flood of budget airlines, there are cheap flights to be found. The best rates are generally booked at least three weeks in advance. Consider flying to your destination and travel season for a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) when the plane is not full and most airlines offer cheap flights. Also consider using frequent flyer miles accumulated but make sure you book well in advance, there is a very limited number of seats designated for the redemption of frequent flyer.

Look for deals on transportation. If you rent a car, many agencies offer great discounts if you rent for a week or more. Insurance may be the biggest cost so check before you go if the insurance company or credit card covers rental cars. Think about doing without a lease if you visit the big cities that have adequate public transportation, it will not only save money but also the traffic headaches. If you owned a car club you may be eligible for travel discounts, so keep that in mind.

Hotel accommodations are another expense that can not be avoided but the bidding can be found. Many large discount through online auction sites, like Priceline.com, do your research and make sure you are getting a deal before you bid. Also consider alternatives to hotels and resorts such as camping or home exchange. Youth hostels sounds like something primitive and only for children but many allow family and has excellent facilities.
